Activist Salekh Rustamov is on the mend

After he stopped his long hunger strike, the health condition of the Azerbaijani activist, Salekh Rustamov, began improving, said Adil Geibulla, a doctor.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 6, Salekh Rustamov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), went on a hunger strike in protest against the fact that he had not fallen under the announced amnesty. On December 13, on the 38th day of his hunger strike, he refused to drink water; and on December 14, his health condition deteriorated sharply. On December 16, the activist stopped his hunger strike.

Adil Geibulla has noted that nutrition is being restored gradually. In the first days after the hunger strike, Rustamov is given more liquid food and broths. Injections are also ongoing to restore the balance of vitamins.

"On December 17, Rustamov was examined by doctors from the Baku office of the International Committee of the Red Cross. They also ascertained the weakness of his body," Bakhruz Bairamov, an advocate, has added.

The solidarity hunger strike with Salekh has also ended. "Having stopped his hunger strike, Salekh called on all those who were hunger-striking in solidarity with him to stop it ... We hope that authorities will take into account the calls to release Salekh," said his brother Talekh Rustamov.

The brother has noted that the solidarity hunger-strikers needed no medical care. "Our hunger strike lasted for three days; and no one had a sharp deterioration of health condition, although some felt weak," Talekh Rustamov has stated.
