Oppositionists released from police after detentions at elections in Armenia

Law enforcers have set free the supporters of the oppositional "David Ambartsumyan" bloc, who were detained on December 5 in the Armenian village of Aintap during the elections.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 5, the voting was held at local elections in 38 communities of Armenia. In the village of Aintap, law enforcers detained Karen Sargsyan, a candidate for the Council of Elders, and his brother, who was also running in the municipal elections. According to their advocate, they were wrongly accused of using violence near the polling station.

Karen Sargsyan, the Aintap village head, his brother and two other supporters of the "David Ambartsumyan" bloc were detained on the basis of an anonymous report, Arman Karapetyan, the advocate for the bloc, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the advocate, three hours after detention, the oppositionists were released from the police station. "Karen Sargsyan, in particular, wrote an explanatory note to the police that there was an attempt to discredit (the bloc) and create obstacles in the voting," Mr Karapetyan has explained.
