NSS of Armenia discloses details of case on espionage in favour of Azerbaijan

A case against a commander of a military detachment and his acquaintance, accused of transferring secret information to Azerbaijan, has been prepared for submission to court, the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that according to the investigators’ version, during the 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh, a commander of an Armenian army detachment and his acquaintance transferred information about the armament and deployment of the Armenian troops to the Azerbaijani special services. The commander of the military detachment did the above until late October 2020, and at the same time, he was awarded the medals “For Impeccable Service” and “For Participation in Hostilities”. The second accused disclosed to the enemy the location of an anti-aircraft missile system, which allowed the Azerbaijani troops to destroy the target from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

According to the investigators’ version, the secret information transferred by the accused men to the Azerbaijani special services influenced the enemy’s tactics in the autumn of 2020. The Azerbaijani armed forces appeared to be able to break through the defence and advance into the territory of Karabakh.

The agreement on information transfer was signed at the Embassy of Azerbaijan. The spies were promised 20,000 US dollars, but they got only 4500 US dollars.

It should be noted that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reported during the hostilities about the agitators who were working at the front, trying to convince soldiers of the senselessness of resistance and spreading rumours about the readiness of the authorities to cede territory in Karabakh to Azerbaijan. One of the above-mentioned agitators, a resident of Stepanakert, was detained.
