Saakashvili's opponents hold protest action in Rustavi

At a protest action staged near the Rustavi Prison, where Mikhail Saakashvili, a former Georgian President, is kept, several dozen of his opponents recalled the law violations committed during his presidency.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 16, several hundred activists from among Saakashvili's opponents protested near Prison No. 12 in Rustavi, where the politician is being kept. They demanded not to recognize Saakashvili as a political prisoner.

After returning to Georgia, Saakashvili was arrested, as he had been sentenced in absentia in Georgia to three years under the case of abuse of power when pardoning those convicted for the murder of businessman, Sandro Girgvliani, and to six years under the 2005 case of beating the MP Valery Gelashvili. He also saw charges under other cases. Saakashvili was President of Georgia in 2004-2013.

Earlier, Saakashvili reproached Georgian authorities with red tape when considering his cases in court. He has suggested that he was being deliberately held in isolation in the run-up to the second round of elections.
