Chechnya keeps the lead in crime growth in Russia

During the first seven months of 2021, the count of crimes in Chechnya went up by 28.8%, which was the worst indicator in Russia. The top ten regions with the most unfavourable dynamics also include Ingushetia, Krasnodar Territory and Dagestan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Russia, after five months of 2021, Chechnya was the leader in the number of registered crimes - according to the official statistics of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the count thereof increased by 41.2%. Magomed Shalimov, the chairman of the Independent Trade Union of Law Enforcement and Prosecutor's Office Workers of Dagestan, has explained such a significant increase by the fact that law enforcers had stopped understating these indicators.

The information about a sharp crime growth in Chechnya has appeared amid Ramzan Kadyrov's nomination to the post of the head of the republic. His candidacy was supported by President Vladimir Putin, who said that with the participation of Kadyrov, Chechnya had become one of the safest regions of the Russian Federation. For Russian authorities, the weakening of Chechen separatism is more important than the crime growth, said Akhmet Yarlykapov, an expert from the Centre for Studying Caucasian Problems at the Moscow Institute of International Relations (known as MGIMO).
