Human rights defenders prevent eviction of people from barracks in Nazran

A court has agreed with the arguments of the lawyer of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* that the city administration has no right to file such claims and refused to evict 25 families of forced migrants from barracks in Nazran.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that officials try to evict 13 families of forced migrants from North Ossetia and Chechnya from the barracks in Nazran without offering housing in return, the HRC “Memorial” reported in October 2020.

The Magas District Court refused to grant the claims of the Nazran administration to evict the residents of three barracks located in Fabrichnaya Street. The interests of 11 families living in those barracks were represented in court by Khadija Godoborscheva, a lawyer of the HRC “Memorial”, the HRC reports today.

Khadija Godoborscheva requested the court to leave without consideration the claims for the eviction of the residents, since the Nazran administration did not have documents of title to those barracks.

“Of course, we are glad that we managed to avoid the eviction of people. However, unfortunately, the problem remains unresolved: people continue to live in dilapidated barracks that have long expired their service life. The republic’s authorities are not looking for an opportunity to allocate other housing, to sort out each individual case, but they simply persistently seek eviction of the people into the street, to nowhere,” Timur Akiev, the head of the office of the HRC “Memorial”* located in Nazran, commented on the court’s decision.

* The organization is included by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of Russia in the register of NGOs performing the functions of a foreign agent.
