Negotiations on situation in Syunik turn to be unsuccessful

At a meeting with the participation of the commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, delegates of Armenia and Azerbaijan failed to solve the border conflict. The Azerbaijani armed forces stay at the positions they took, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 12, Azerbaijani militaries advanced three kilometres deep into the Syunik Region of Armenia and, according to the administration of the city of Goris, tried to gain a foothold in the area of Black Lake. The next day, the Azerbaijani militaries again tried to advance deep into the Syunik Region, but were stopped, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed.

The Armenian-Azerbaijani talks on the situation in Syunik were held on the evening of May 15. General Rustam Muradov, the commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, coordinated the negotiations. According to Menua Ovsepyan, the deputy head of the Goris community in the Syunik Region of Armenia, the negotiations did not yield any results, the “Sputnik Armenia” reported.

The Azerbaijani military personnel continue to stay in the Syunik and Gegarkunik Regions of Armenia, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent has been informed by the Armenian MoD. According to Armenian military officials, the Armenian side insists that the Azerbaijanis leave their positions. “The Azerbaijani soldiers did not move deep into the territory after May 13, and in some places, as a result of the actions of the Armenian army, they have completely retreated,” an official of the Armenian MoD added.
