Human rights defenders secure an inspection of an orphan boarding school in Ninotsminda

After requests from human rights defenders and a letter from the UN profile committee, officials from the Georgian Ministry for Public Health visited an orphan boarding school in the town of Ninotsminda to check information about child abuse.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in April, Georgia Ombudsperson Nino Lomdjariya claimed that her office personnel were not allowed to monitor the St. Nino Djavakheti orphans boarding school in the city of Ninotsminda, operating under the Patriarchate of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The problem became urgent after the broadcast of stories by the “Rustavi-2”, “Mtavari Arkhi”, and “Pirveli” TV Channels and the claims of the Ombudsperson, who complained about the possible cruel treatment of children.

The NGO “Partnership for Human Rights” (PHR) appealed to the UN with a request to monitor the condition of children who were locked up in the orphan boarding school in Ninotsminda. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) granted the complaint of the Georgian NGO and issued an interim resolution. The state is obliged to immediately provide the state supervisory authorities with the appropriate powers to check the legal status of children in the Ninotsminda orphan boarding school, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child declares.

Officials from the Georgian Ministry for Public Health entered the orphan boarding school in Ninotsminda to investigate the situation, the “Rustavi-2” TV Channel reported on May 13.
