Armenia claims second violation of border by Azerbaijani soldiers within two days

For the second time within two days, Azerbaijani soldiers attempted to advance deep into the Syunik Region, but were stopped, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) reports today.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 12, the Azerbaijani military personnel advanced three kilometres deep into the Syunik Region of Armenia and, according to the city administration of Goris, tried to advance into the Black Lake area.

Today, under the pretext of “clarifying the borders,” the Azerbaijani troops have tried to move in the direction of the towns of Sisian and Vardenis in the Syunik Region, the press service for the Armenian MoD reports. According to the MoD, the advance of the Azerbaijani forces has been suspended. “The Azerbaijani side was handed over a demand to immediately leave the territory and return to their original positions,” announced the Armenian MoD as translated from the Armenian language by the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

The Armenian MoD considered the actions of the Azerbaijani side “an encroachment on the sovereign territory of Armenia.”

Viktor Biyagov, Permanent and Plenipotentiary Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), has announced that “if units of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan are not withdrawn from the territory of Armenia as soon as possible and within a reasonable time, all responsibility for the further escalation of the situation will lie with the Azerbaijani side,” the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) declared.
