Because of COVID-19, some Georgian residents refused from pompous Easter celebrations

In churches in Georgia, Easter services were held with a limited number of believers; in some of them, services were held outdoors due to coronavirus restrictions. Some residents of Tbilisi preferred to celebrate Easter in a narrow family circle, but some decided not to miss visiting a church.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Georgian authorities relaxed the restrictions on the Easter, reducing the curfew from eight to five hours and allowing liturgies to be held in churches. At the same time, the priests took security measures, in particular, keeping the social distance.

Despite the fear of infection, Maya, a resident of Tbilisi, visited a church with her husband at night.

Anna's family celebrates all major religious holidays and invites guests. "With the onset of the pandemic, we abandoned this tradition – there are elderly people in the family; and financial difficulties have arisen, since the source of income was lost," she said.

Due to the pandemic, the feeling of a feast has disappeared, said Ekaterina, a believer.

Easter is a beautiful tradition, Arthur has noted. His family celebrates Easter, but for them this religious holiday is more of a tradition than a manifestation of religious feelings.

As of May 2, more than 314,000 people have been infected in Georgia since the pandemic onset, 4130 have died.
