Protests at Armenian GPO escalate into clashes with police

The "Movement to Save Fatherland" has demanded to release those detained after Pashinyan's visit to the Syunik Region. More than 50 people were detained, including the head of the Megri community, oppositionists have reported. A clash of law enforcers with supporters of the opposition occurred near the building of the Armenian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 21, the residents of the Syunik Region, who demand resignation of the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, blocked the road for his motorcade; and he himself was forced to leave the city of Agarak. Then, the Premier instructed law enforcers to find and punish the organizers of the protests. On the same day, opposition supporters went to government dachas in Yerevan to support residents of the Syunik Region.

They demanded to release all the detainees; and leaders of the movement treated the detentions as politically motivated.

"The regime has taken the path of repressions and captures everyone who resists it," said Gegam Manukyan, a member of the ARF "Dashnaktsutyun" Party.

Clashes with policemen at the GPO broke out after Pashinyan's opponents began throwing eggs in the direction of the building. During the clashes, one of the law enforcers felt bad and was taken to hospital.
