SC schedules a date to consider complaint about Kadyrov’s death threats against critics

Human rights defenders who demanded to carry out an investigation into threats voiced by Ramzan Kadyrov found themselves without access to justice. Investigators refused to issue any resolution on their complaints, and the court dismissed the complaint about the investigators’ inaction because they had not issued any resolution, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 22, 2020, the HRC “Memorial”* and the Moscow Helsinki Group sent a complaint to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF). In their complaint, the human rights defenders noted that the calls for murder voiced by Ramzan Kadyrov were undermining the prestige of the authorities and might be perceived by subordinates of the leader of Chechnya as a guide to action.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has scheduled for April 7 the first hearing on the complaint lodged by the human rights defenders against the court ruling in Grozny. The activists twice received a refusal from the ICRF’s Department for Chechnya to conduct an investigation.

Let us remind you that several attacks on journalists and bloggers occurred after Ramzan Kadyrov had delivered his speech with a call to punish authors of negative materials about the republic. On February 6, 2020, a group of men and women attacked Elena Milashina and Krasnodar advocate Marina Dubrovina in a Grozny hotel.

The organization is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the “Register of non-profit organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent”.
