Turkmen activist Choliev’s wife claims facing material difficulties after his deportation

Myakhridjemal Khudainazarova, a student from Turkmenistan, continues her studies in Cherkessk. After her common-law husband Rozgeldy Choliev was deported from Russia, the young woman with her child has to survive only due to the material assistance she gets from her fellow compatriots. Russian border guards now deny that they refused to accept an asylum application from Rozgeldy Choliev, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 2, Rozgeldy Choliev was detained at the Moscow airport while he was trying to return to Cherkessk to his common-law wife and their child. After a three-week stay in the neutral zone of the Russian airport, the Turkmen oppositionist was notified of the refusal to consider his application for refugee status and deported to Turkey.

Rozgeldy Choliev studied in Karachay-Cherkessia since 2018, but in September 2020, he was expelled from the university. The HRC “Memorial”* reported that the university administration threatened Rozgeldy Choliev with deportation to Turkmenistan for his posts criticizing President Berdymukhamedov on social media platforms.

Myakhridjemal Khudainazarova, a common-law wife of the Turkmen oppositionist, continues to study at the University of Cherkessk. According to her, neither she nor her common-law husband have benefits from the authorities of Turkmenistan, and they paid for their studies on their own.

The student expects to be reunited with her common-law husband. The young woman worries very much about his husband's deportation. According to her, only her fellow compatriots, Turkmen students, help her financially.

After the forced expulsion of Rozgeldy Choliev to Turkey, representatives of the Turkmen authorities began to actively search for him in that country, the HRC “Memorial” reports.
