Police disperse feminist march in Baku

In Baku, the police have dispersed a rally of feminists protesting against gender inequality and domestic crimes. According to the organizers of the rally, on the March 8 holiday, it is high time to draw attention to the rights of women and their problems.

For the first time, feminists tried to hold in Baku the action "Speak Against Violence" on March 8, 2019. The police then pushed aside the women, and a group of female provocateurs also took part the dispersal of the action.

On Facebook, Azerbaijani feminists point out that during the pandemic, "there has been no state programme to help women who, because of the quarantine, have been captured at home with individuals prone to the use of violence."

Furthermore, the issues concerning the impact of military operations and aggravated socio-economic problems on the lives of women were left without attention, the organizers of the rally claimed.

"The day of March 8 should not be celebrated as a day of giving flowers and gifts to women ... The history of this day is connected precisely with the protest against gender inequality, but it was forgotten. Today, gender equality is far from fully ensured in Azerbaijan," activist Gyulnara Mekhtieva said.

According to her, a woman is perceived primarily as a person who is engaged in everyday household tasks in Azerbaijan.

The police stopped the illegal action, the press service for the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Azerbaijan reported.
