Collection of signatures in support of Ara Sagatelyan launched in Yerevan
The signatories of the petition in support of Ara Sagatelyan, a former chief of staff of the Armenian Parliament, who was arrested within the case of fakes during the aggravation of the Karabakh conflict, treat his arrest as a political persecution.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 21, Ara Sagatelyan was arrested within the case of spreading fakes during the aggravation of the Karabakh conflict.
On February 28, in Yerevan, in Bagramyan Avenue, the collection of signatures in support of Ara Sagatelyan began, the "News-Armenia" writes.
The initiators of the campaign have stated that the Sagatelyan's persecution is political in nature; and there are no legal grounds for his arrest. Artsvik Minasyan, one of the signatories, a member of the ARF "Dashnaktsutyun", has stated that the collected signatures could play a role in the consideration of the case at the court of appeal.
Earlier, the political background in Sagatelyan's case was also stated by Alexander Iskandaryan, a political analyst and Director of the Caucasus Institute. "This case is sewn with white threads," the "aysor.am" quotes him as saying.
Alexander Markarov, a political analyst, sticks to a similar opinion. He has suggested that Sagatelyan was detained because he fought against Azerbaijani propaganda.
