Attempt against MIA's head committed in Dagestan

Late in the evening on February 3, an assassination attempt was undertaken in Dagestan against Adilgerei Magomedtagirov, head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Republic. To entice the minister into ambush, the militants shot dead an investigator who was a son of general Magomedtagirov's close friend and then exploded the jeep car, in which the minister was to arrive to the place of the crime. Three militiamen were killed, but the minister who had used another car suffered no damage.

According to the information obtained by the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" at the press centre of the President and the Government of the Republic of Dagestan, President Mukhu Aliev held a closed meeting with the Republic's law enforcement bodies on the fact of the attempt.

In his presentation, Mukhu Aliev emphasized that it was the second, during the latest six months, attempt against the head of the MIA of the Republic. According to Mr. Aliev, despite multiple assurances of the head of the Republic's law enforcement bodies, the first attempt, committed in August 2006 has not been disclosed so far. The impunity of the culprits gave them a chance to prepare and undertake the second attempt against the head of the Ministry.
