Tbilisi resident detained for beating up transgender woman

In Tbilisi, policemen have detained a 31-year-old man suspected of beating up a transgender woman out of hostility, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has informed.

According to investigators, the transgender woman turned to the police after several persons "abused her verbally and physically."

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 30, 2020, a transgender woman set herself on fire in front of the Tbilisi Mayoralty in protest against the growth of transphobia amid self-isolation in quarantine. She also explained her act by the fact that the hostile attitude of the society led to a lack of earnings and means for living. Human rights defenders then called on the authorities to pay attention to people deprived of social support and their relatives' help.
