Georgia's GPO gets interested in demarcation of Azerbaijani border

Experts of the commission on the demarcation and delimitation of the state borders of Georgia are suspected of having coordinated sections of the border with Azerbaijan to the detriment of the country's interests, the General Prosecutor's Office has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that due to the incomplete process of demarcation of the border with Azerbaijan, there is a dispute over one of the most important cultural and religious attractions of Georgia, the "David Gareja" Monastery Complex. In spring and summer of 2019, both Georgian and Azerbaijani activists held their actions on the disputed section of the border.

The GPO of Georgia has launched an inquiry into the violation of the inviolability of the country's territory, says the GPO's message circulated on September 29, which was translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The inquiry was launched after receiving written information from the Georgian Ministry of Defence (MoD) that the governmental commission on demarcation and delimitation of the country's state borders "had illegally and to the detriment of the territorial interests of our country coordinated certain sections of the Georgian-Azerbaijani border," the GPO has stated.

The sanctions under the article on violating the inviolability of the territory of Georgia provide for up to fifteen years in prison, the GPO has added.
