In North and South Ossetia, Day of Knowledge postponed to honour victims of Beslan tragedy
In North Ossetia, schools will organize solemn morning gatherings on September 4, after a three-day watch in memory of people who fell victim to the terror act in Beslan, the Ministry of Education and Science of North Ossetia reports. In South Ossetia, the new school year will begin on September 5, the republic's authorities announce.
On September 1, 2004, terrorists took 1128 hostages in a gym of the Beslan school No. 1. The special operation to release the hostages was finished on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people were killed, including 186 children, and other 810 people were injured.
Today, the press service of the leader and government of North Ossetia has reported that starting from September 1, republic's schools are holding a three-day watch in memory of the victims killed in the terror act in the Beslan school.
In the gym of the Beslan school where the hostages were kept, candles are lit near the photographs of the victims killed during the terror act. People are carrying toys and water to the school yard in memory of the fact that the terrorists did not allow the hostages to drink water during three days. Mourning music will sound all three days. The school will host a memorial service, and the Beslan Palace of Culture will host the exhibition of photographs entitled "Remember in Order to Live", which will present footage of the release of children and adults taken hostage, an official from the press service of the leader and government of North Ossetia reports.
In solidarity with the victims of the Beslan tragedy, the authorities of South Ossetia postponed the beginning of the school year from September 1 to September 5.
