Abkhazia temporarily opens border with Georgia

Residents of Abkhazia have got the opportunity to return home from Georgia until August 9. A medical control was organized for people crossing the border.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 14, the authorities of Abkhazia completely closed the border with Georgia and explained the closure of border checkpoints by measures against the spread of the coronavirus infection. To give local residents a chance to return home, the authorities opened border checkpoints several times.

A new humanitarian corridor will operate again from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the period from August 5 to 9. "All citizens arriving from Georgia will be required to undergo a medical and sanitary control of their health state," announced the State Security Service of Abkhazia on its website on August 4.

It should be noted that on August 1, the restrictions on crossing the border between Russia and Abkhazia were lifted. In the first day alone, more than 7500 people crossed the border in both directions. The authorities of Abkhazia and Russia are preparing for a possible worsening of the epidemiological situation after the opening of the border for Russian tourists, the Ministry for Public Health of Abkhazia reported.
