Tbilisi resident detained for attacking transgender people

Late in the evening on August 4, in Tbilisi, four transgender women were attacked by young men. The attackers were in a state of alcoholic intoxication, but they managed to flee before the police arrived. Emergency medical aid was provided to the attacked transgender people. The victims have complained that they do not feel safe, since members of the LGBT community are often attacked in Georgia, the edition "JAMnews" reports today.

The police detained a suspect, born in 1992. Investigators suggest that the man was involved in the attack on the transgender people in Tbilisi. "The investigators found that on the territory adjacent to a circus, the detainee verbally and physically insulted two transgender women because of his intolerance, and after that he fled the scene," the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia reports on its website today.

The suspect is charged with using violence against two or more persons, and the criminal case is being investigated under Part 1 of Article 126 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for the punishment of up to two years of imprisonment. The detainee pleaded guilty, the Georgian MIA reported.
