"Novaya Gazeta": deceased Gudermes woman was regularly beaten

The woman from Gudermes, whose death provoked interference of Ramzan Kadyrov in a conflict between the two families, was regularly beaten in her husband's family, the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" reports today.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that on June 12, Madina, a 23-year-old mother of three children, died in a house of her husband and his parents. In contradiction to Islamic traditions, the woman was buried at night. After social networks disseminated reports that the young woman had fallen victim to domestic violence, her mother succeeded in seeking exhumation of her daughter's body and attended the procedure. Without waiting for the results of the forensic examination, the leader of Chechnya met the mother and the husband of the deceased woman, as well as her other relatives. The mother of the deceased young woman apologized for the statement about the violent death of her daughter.

In 2013, at the age of 16, Madina Umaeva married a 20-year-old resident of Gudermes. According to her mother, the husband regularly beat the young woman, reports Elena Milashina in her article "What happened to Madina Umaeva?" posted today on the "Novaya Gazeta" website.

"Neither Madina's relatives, nor her husband's relatives deny the fact that Madina often ran away from home. According to her mother, Madina was regularly beaten by her husband. No one denied the mother's claims. Over all seven years of the Madina's marriage, the mother and the father of the young woman were persuading her to endure beatings "for the sake of children" and were returning her to the husband's house," the author of the article reports.
