Chechnya's actions on border demarcation highlight inaction of Dagestani authorities

By marking borders in the Gumbetovsky District, Chechnya is trying to push Dagestani authorities to finalize the demarcation works, journalists believe. It is time for Dagestani authorities to clarify the territorial issue in order to avoid provocations, they assert.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Magomed Daudov, the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, urged Dagestan to complete the border demarcation so as not to provoke a conflict of residents of the republics.

Dagestani observers have indicated that certain areas of work were conducted in one-sided way in favour of Chechnya; therefore, the Speakers of the Chechen and Dagestani Parliaments had agreed to suspend the works and continue them in 2020, said Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly.

By installing road signs and poles, the Chechen party is trying to encourage Dagestan to take more active steps towards continuing the border demarcation, said Milrad Fatullaev, the editor-in-chief of the "Derbent" News Agency.

Shamil Khadulaev, the chairman of the NGOs' Coordination Council, also believes that it is necessary to complete all the mutual border demarcation works.
