Journalist responds to Kadyrov's threats with application to ICRF

Elena Milashina, an observer of the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper, has demanded to initiate a criminal case about the threat of murder and an attempt to interfere with the journalistic professional activities. She has stated that, if awarded some compensation, she will hire advocates to protect victims of torture and unlawful detentions in Chechnya.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that nine Russian and international human rights organizations asked the PACE Special Rapporteur for Northern Caucasus to register Ramzan Kadyrov's threats against Milashina. The European Union has also called on Russian authorities to investigate Chechen authorities' threats and ensure Milashina's safety.

In her article, Milashina had criticized the measures taken by the Chechen authorities in connection with the coronavirus threat. After that, Kadyrov demanded from Russian authorities to "stop the nonhumans" from the "Novaya Gazeta". Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, said that the Kadyrov's statement was "very emotional," but contained "nothing unusual."
