Georgian transgender women accuse police of biased attitude

Four transgender women are suspected of disorderly conduct and failure to obey the police, while people who attacked the transgender women remained unpunished, claimed a transgender woman detained in Tbilisi.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 18, a group of young people attacked transgender women in Tbilisi. Policemen detained one of the transgender women who were attacked and activist Nata Peradze, who stood up for the detainee.

The police refused to accept a complaint about the attack from the transgender women, claimed detained Gabriela at the office of the NGO "Movement for Equality". Gabriela has noted that transgender people are regularly attacked, but the police do not respond to their complaints.

The transgender women gathered in the square because they are engaged in prostitution, Gabriela admits. "The only work that remains for us is sex services, since no one wants to hire us, although there are women with higher education among us ... As soon as employers find out that an applicant is a transgender woman, they refuse her a job," Gabriela said. According to her, transgender people also remain without the support of their family members, since in general, the relatives do not want to communicate with them.
