SC upholds verdict to resident of Chechnya for financing terrorism

The Russia's Supreme Court (SC) has upheld the sentence passed to Yusup Ukhigov, a resident of Chechnya, convicted under the case of transferring money to a man, who had intended to join Syrian militants.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 30, the North-Caucasian District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Yusup Ukhigov to six years in colony after finding him guilty of transferring money to a native of Chechnya, who had planned to join Syrian militants.

Later, the defence appealed against the verdict, but the Panel for Military Cases of the Russia's SC has also found Ukhigov guilty.

According to investigators, in 2016, while in Austria, Ukhigov transferred money to Shamil Suleimanov, who had intended to leave for Syria aiming to join the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court. On March 14, 2017, the court sentenced Suleimanov to three years in prison; and he pleaded guilty.
