"Musavat" Party reports pressure on activists throughout Azerbaijan

Law enforcers are persecuting leaders of the "Musavat" Party, who meet party activists in the regions of Azerbaijan on the eve of the election of a new party leader. After meetings, local activists are summoned to the police.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 22, law enforcers disrupted a conference of "Musavat" members in the city of Lankaran. Party leaders complained of rude treatment and physical pressure.

"The ruling repressive regime, worried with our actions held with people in the regions to discuss political issues, creates obstacles for meetings of the candidates for the post of the "Musavat" chairman with delegates to the congress and other party members," the leadership of the party has stated.

The "Musavat" condemns the pressure on activists and demands to stop the persecution of the opposition. "We are forced to hold our meetings in the regions in a semi-legal manner. On October 4, three participants of the meeting in the Khachmaz District, Ilyas Yasinov, Ramazan Aliev and Sokhrab Amrakhov, were summoned to the police division and told to 'no longer have any ties with the opposition," Arif Gadjily, a candidate for the post of the party chairman, has stated.
