Chechen singer Ayub Vakharagov denies reports of his detention because of songs

Ayub Vakharagov, a singer from Chechnya, has denied the information from Kheda Saratova, a member of the Human Rights Council under the leader of the republic, concerning the detention of him and his brother for an "educational conversation" because of a violation of the government's ban on singing his songs.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 8, Kheda Saratova, a member of the Human Rights Council under the leader of Chechnya, reported that amateur singers, brothers Ayub and Askhab Vakharagov were detained for the "educational conversation," since they violated the ban on singing songs that were not approved by the Chechen authorities. According to a source in the Gudermes District, the law enforcement bodies have been keeping the brothers in custody for two weeks already.

On July 15, the Minister of Culture of Chechnya, Khozh-Baudi Daaev, on air of the "Grozny" Chechen State TV and Radio Company (known as ChGTRK) criticized the amateur performers from Chechnya, who were posting their records on the Internet. Only performers approved by the commission may perform concerts and post records of their songs on the Internet, said the minister.

On September 9, Ayub Vakharagov, one of the brothers, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that "no one had detained them with his brother." "The information is incorrect. The problems arose because of an outstanding loan, but now everything has already been resolved," Ayub Vakharagov said. He refused to disclose any details. So far, the "Caucasian Knot" has not received any comments from Askhab Vakharagov.
