Journalist Afghan Mukhtarly complains about violation of his rights in jail

Nemat Kerimli, am advocate, has met the journalist, Afghan Mukhtarly, who is serving his term in a colony in Baku. The journalist said that the administration of the jail restricts his rights to use the phone and be visited.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in May 2017, Afghan Mukhtarly was detained, and in January 2018, the court sentenced Mukhtarly to six years in prison on charges of illegally crossing the border, smuggling, and resisting an authority official. In April 2019, the journalist complained about deterioration of his health in jail.

On August 25, Mukhtarly informed by phone his wife, who is in political emigration in Europe, that he is afraid of provocations.

On the following day, Arif Gadjily, an advocate and the head of the "Musavat" Party, was again not allowed to visit the journalist.

Besides, the journalist's wife said that the colony administration failed to give Mukhtarly the money sent by his friend. After it became known to the public, the money was given to the journalist.

The Azerbaijani Penitentiary Service denies any violation of journalist's, but recognizes a possibility to restrict visits to the convict.
