HRC "Memorial" recognizes Abdulmumin Gadjiev as a political prisoner

Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft), who was arrested in a case on terrorist financing, is being prosecuted for political reasons, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has declared today and demanded to release the journalist.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 18, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the newspaper "Chernovik", was taken into custody in the case on terrorist financing. Abdulmumin Gadjiev fell victim to persecution because of his articles on Islamic topics, believes Magdi Kamalov, a founder of the newspaper "Chernovik". Abdulmumin Gadjiev himself claims the case against him has been fabricated.

The HRC "Memorial" declares journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev to be a political prisoner, the press service of the HRC "Memorial" reports today.

"We demand the immediate release of Abdulmumin Gadjiev," the human rights defenders wrote in the statement posted on the website of the HRC "Memorial"

"The charge brought against Abdulmumin Gadjiev does not prove his intention to take part in the activities of a terrorist organization and to organize the financing of terrorism," said Galina Tarasova, a lawyer of the HRC "Memorial", as emphasized in the human rights defenders' statement.
