Residents of South Ossetia and Georgia pay tribute to victims killed in five-day war

Hundreds of residents of South Ossetia and Georgia took part in the events on the day of the 11th anniversary of the conflict in August 2008. Relatives of victims reported the stories of Ossetian residents killed in the war. Salome Zurabishvili, the leader of Georgia, announced the creation of a commission to discuss the events of the war.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the period from the evening on August 6 to the morning on August 9, the border between South Ossetia and Georgia was closed in connection with the mourning events.

On August 8, 2008, combat actions began between Georgia and South Ossetia, and after that Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, while Georgia broke off diplomatic relations with Russia.

In front of the parliament building in South Ossetia, people laid portraits of the victims killed during the war and lit candles. Activists performed patriotic songs and read poems, dedicated to the heroism of Ossetian soldiers, the information agency "Res" reports.

Alan Gagloev, a resident of South Ossetia, said that at night on August 8, 2008, his parents were burned alive in a car during a tank shelling attack, the "RussiaNews" reports.

Mourning events were also held in Georgia, primarily at the Mukhatgverdi cemetery in Tbilisi, where the killed soldiers and officers were buried, the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports.

Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze reports that the most important thing for Georgia is "to prevent a repeat of the war."

Let us remind you that on August 1, the Russian parliament agreed to consider the request of South Ossetia to recognize the genocide of the Ossetian population by Georgia.
