Arrest of Ingush elder Malsag Uzhakhov extended

A Nalchik court has extended, until September 25, the arrest of Malsag Uzhakhov, the head of the Council of Teips (family clans) of the Ingush People. The arrest is telling negatively on Uzhakhov's health, because he cannot take medicines regularly, his defence has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Malsag Uzhakhov was arrested within a criminal case on the use of violence against policemen during a March rally in Magas. On May 23, the court appointed him a second fine because of the October 2018 rally.

On May 22, 2019, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) ordered to suspend the activities of the above Council of Teips for three months, but the interim leadership of the Council stated that it would continue its work, and would appeal against the MoJ's order. Members of the Council of Teips lost the right to speak on behalf of the Council.

Apart from the defence, a number of well-known scientists, lawyers, public figures and arts workers have appealed to the court asking to take into account the state of Uzhakhov's health and place him under house arrest.

The advocate has treated the court's ruling to extend the arrest as unjustified and claimed that he would appeal against it.
