Ingush students arrested in Egypt face sharp health deterioration, their relatives report
Four Ingush students kept in a Cairo prison were transferred to a medical unit because of deterioration of their health state after a hunger strike, their relatives reported. After a meeting with family members of the arrested students, human rights defenders promised to contact the Russia's Ombudsperson.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 22, human rights defenders Svetlana Gannushkina, Oleg Orlov, Alexander Cherkasov, and Valery Borschev arrived in Ingushetia and met relatives and friends of the students kept in the prison in Egypt.
In August 2018, five young people from Ingushetia were detained in Egypt. They had left for Egypt without the knowledge of their parents and studied in Cairo at mosques. On April 9, four of them were accused of extremism. The fate of the fifth detainee, Khizir Dugiev, remains unknown. On April 2, the detained students went on a hunger strike, demanding to release them. The young people are handcuffed to beds and left without water, their relatives have reported. On April 18, it became known that the arrested young people stopped their hunger strike.
Following the meeting of the Russian human rights defenders with relatives and friends of the Ingush students arrested in Egypt, it was decided to contact Tatiana Moskalkova, Russia's Ombudsperson, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs MFA), the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Svetlana Gannushkina, who attended the meeting.
According to the recent information got by the relatives on April 23, the health state of thee arrested students seriously deteriorated after their hunger strike, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Ali Marem Dzeitova, a mother of one of the arrested students.
According to Khadishat Pugoeva, a wife of Ilez Aushev, another student, she contacts a mother of one of her husband's cellmates. "Their condition is very poor. They have lost weight and became weak after their hunger strike. On April 22, they were transferred to a medical unit," said Khadishat Pugoeva.
