In 2017, five persons fell victim to armed conflict in Karachay-Cherkessia

In 2017, in Karachay-Cherkessia, at least 5 people fell victims to the ongoing armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. All of them were killed. In 2017, the situation worsened as compared to 2016, when no victims were registered. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

As a rule, the main indicator of the intensity of an armed conflict is the number of victims killed and wounded people during armed clashes and armed incidents, as well as bombings and terror acts. However, the very number of such cases is no less important and informative.

The "Caucasian Knot" provides the information on the number of armed incidents, terror acts, and bombings in the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) in 2017 compared with the number of similar incidents in 2016.

Armed incidents

In 2017, in Karachay-Cherkessia, one armed incident was reported, and five people were killed in it. They were suspected members of illegal armed formations (IAFs).

On December 18, they were killed in the village of Zelenchukskaya during a counterterrorist operation (CTO). The killed suspects were plotting terror acts crowded places, the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" notes: the statistics on members of the armed underground mentions those who were declared as such by the law enforcement bodies.

According to the "Caucasian Knot", for the period from January to December 2016, no armed incidents at all were registered in Karachay-Cherkessia.

Bombings and terror acts

In 2017 and in 2016, no bombings and terror acts were registered in the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia.

If to compare the total number of victims (five persons) to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus in the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia for 2017 with the data for 2016, 2015, and 2014, then it can be concluded that the situation in the republic has worsened.

Let us remind you that in 2016, in Karachay-Cherkessia, no victims were registered. In 2015, four victims to the armed conflict (all killed) were registered in the republic, and in 2014, no victims to the armed conflict were registered in Karachay-Cherkessia.

In 2013, in the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia, the total number of victims to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus reached seven people. Of them, five were killed and two others were injured. In 2012, in the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia, the total number of victims to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus also amounted to 7 victims, including 5 killed and 2 wounded.

It should be realized that the provided statistics cannot reflect with the 100 percent accuracy the number of victims for each of the categories highlighted in the review. Not all information is included in the news reports.
