Museum first robbed in Nagorno-Karabakh

A valuable silver coin of the 1st century BC is stolen from the Tigranakert Museum because of insufficient security measures, reported the Ministry of Culture for Nagorno-Karabakh.

The administration of the Tigranakert Museum filed a complaint to the police that in the morning on September 27, a silver coin was stolen from the second exhibition hall. "The only thing we can report so far is that the investigation is underway," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Felix Arutyunyan, the chief for the press service of the Nagorno-Karabakh police.

The above mentioned silver coin with a portrait of Mithridates III of Parthia was found during archeological works in Tigranakert in 2010. The coin dates back to 57-54 BC, reported Gamlet Petrosyan, the head of the archaeological expedition. "The thief is aware that he has inflicted a lot of damage. I don't find words," wrote Gamlet Petrosyan on his Facebook page on September 28 as translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Such incident in museums occurs for the first time in the history of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Artak Grigoryan, the chief for the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Culture.

The official has noted that the theft was possible because of insufficient security measures.
