Resident of Ingushetia convicted of "honour murder"

The court has sentenced a resident of Ingushetia to eight years in prison, having found him guilty of killing his 31-year-old daughter. A police source said that it was an "honour murder."

The casualty's body was found on February 20, near the village of Yandare of the Nazran District, 40 meters away from the "Kavkaz" Highway.

The court has found her 54-year-old father guilty of killing the woman, says the website of the Investigating Department for Ingushetia of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

"Honour murders" are the killings by relatives of those girls who were treated as having disgraced their clan. "It's terrible that such a thing as an 'honour murder' still exists in the brains of our fellow tribesmen; in fact, it makes the killer or rapist invulnerable," said Svetlana Anokhina, a rights activist in her comment on the murder of a girl in Khasavyurt in March.
