Parliament of Georgia approves creation of military reserve service
The Georgian MPs have adopted in the first reading a draft of legislative amendments that provide for the creation of the reserve service. The implementation of this initiative depends on the funding, military experts believe.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the concept of the reserve service was presented to the Parliament on March 25, 2017.
The reserve will consist of an active and a mobilization parts, said Nukri Gelashvili, Deputy Minister of Defence. According to his story, citizens of up to 50 years old, who have undergone compulsory or contract military service, can make the active part of the reserve. They will annually undergo military training for about 45 days.
The mobilization reserve will include the territorial reserve and reserve of civilian specialists. The territorial reserve will involve local residents, who can help the armed forces through their good knowledge of their localities. It will include citizens of up to 55 years old.
The age limit for civilian specialists is less strict – 65 years. But they must have education that can be useful in wartime – in particular, engineering or relating to cyber security.
If they want, women may become reservists.
The creation of the military reserve is a must, since Georgia, like other small countries, can not afford a large army, especially a contract one, says Irakli Aladashvili, the editor-in-chief of the military magazine named "Arsenali".
