Rights defenders complain to ECtHR about violation of Muslims' rights in Adjaria

The Georgian NGO "Centre for Human Rights Training and Monitoring" has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with a complaint of the refusal for Muslims to open a boarding house in the Ajarian city of Kobuleti.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2014 and 2015, residents of Kobuleti repeatedly held protests against construction of a Muslim boarding house. Many of them believed a madrassa was under construction in the city.

According to the rights defenders, the confrontation in Kobuleti was encouraged by local Orthodox religious figures.

The investigation into the case of discrimination against Muslims of Kobuleti, which could not open a boarding house in the city, was ineffective, believe members of the "Centre for Human Rights Training and Monitoring".

"We appealed to the European Court to find out whether the right to religion and the right to receive education were violated and whether the Muslims' rights for equality were violated," Mariam Begadze, an NGO advocate, has reported today on the air of the Georgian "Rustavi 2" TV Channel.
