ECtHR communicates complaint filed by coordinator of Navalny's office in Krasnodar

Following a complaint filed by Miroslav Valkovich, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has sent questions to the government of Russia regarding the detention of a coordinator of oppositionist Alexei Navalny's office at a protest action held in Krasnodar on March 26, 2017.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 26, 2017, Krasnodar hosted an unsanctioned anti-corruption rally of Alexei Navalny's supporters "He is not Dimon". The police detained about 200 people, including Miroslav Valkovich, a coordinator of the regional Alexei Navalny's office. The authorities refused to sanction the rally and accused him of holding the action without notification. He was arrested for 10 days by a court decision.

On January 31, the website of the human rights group "Agora" reported that the ECtHR had communicated the complaint filed by Miroslav Valkovich.

According to Alexander Popkov, an advocate of the group "Agora", the ECtHR expects the Russian authorities to answer the questions on the case before May 4. In particular, the advocate noted that among the key questions, the ECtHR asked the Russian authorities whether the refusal of the Krasnodar Mayoralty to sanction the action and then the arrest and the trial in the administrative case violated the Miroslav Valkovich's right to freedom of assembly.
