Mikhail Saakashvili seeks asylum in Ukraine

Mikhail Saakashvili has submitted the documents that prevent his extradition to Georgia, reported the Ukrainian General Prosecutor. According to an advocate of Mikhail Saakashvili, the Migration Service has not responded to the application for asylum on time.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 10, Mikhail Saakashvili, who was deprived of Ukrainian citizenship on July 26, broke through the state border between Poland and Ukraine.

In his homeland, the former Georgian President has been accused of several crimes, including embezzlement of state funds and abuse of office.

The authorities of Ukraine have ignored the request filed by Mikhail Saakashvili, reported his advocate Markiyan Galabala.

Ukrainian General Prosecutor Yuri Lutsenko has reported that Mikhail Saakashvili has submitted the documents that do not allow extraditing him because of the Ukraine's international obligations.

After Mikhail Saakashvili broke through the state border and returned to Ukraine, the Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation, reported the General Prosecutor of Ukraine. The purpose of the investigation is to find out whether in his homeland the former Georgian President is charged with particularly grave crimes and whether there are obstacles to his extradition. According to Yuri Lutsenko, "the investigation will take several more weeks," reports the RIA "Novosti".
