ReAl movement announces its transformation into a party

In Azerbaijan, the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl) has officially announced its transformation into a political party.

On September 24, a meeting of an initiative group to establish the "ReAl" Party took place in Baku. At the meeting, it was decided to schedule the first constituent congress of the new political organization for October 29. This was reported by Azer Gasymly, a member of the board for the movement "ReAl".

"It was several years ago when we started preparations for the creation of a new party. However, for certain reasons including the imprisonment of Ilgar Mamedov, the chairman for our movement, and the restriction of conditions for political activities in the country our work has been delayed for some time. Meanwhile, we are already approaching the finish line, and everything is ready for the congress," Azer Gasymly told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to him, the movement "ReAl" still advocates for the transformation of Azerbaijan from a super-presidential republic into a parliamentary one with "more representative democracy," for the decentralization of power and the transfer of some centre's powers to the regions.

The movement "ReAl" intends to participate in the presidential election, which is to be held in October 2018, and nominate its leader Ilgar Mamedov as a presidential candidate.
