Resident of Chechnya accused of financing Syrian terrorists

A resident of Chechnya, who in 2015, in Syria, joined the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia, is accused of financing terrorism.

According to the law enforcement agencies for Chechnya, there may be about 700 Chechens in Syria who joined the militants. More than 340 people are put on the international wanted list.

"It has been found out that … earlier this year, Islam Sugaipov, a 31-year-old resident of the republic, organized a fund-raising for the IS members," explained the Investigating Department for Chechnya of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF). The man faces up to 10 years of imprisonment.

In spring, the ICRF's Investigating Department for Chechnya instituted a criminal case under the article of terrorism financing. However, violations of the legislation were committed at the stage of the preliminary investigation. Therefore, the Prosecutor's Office for the Chechen Republic has addressed the investigating authorities with the demand to eliminate the violations.
