Reports on human rights violations force Moskalkova to fly to Chechnya

Tatiana Moskalkova, the Russia’s Ombudsperson, decided to talk personally to Chechen law enforcers and rights defenders during her visit to the region.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ms Moskalkova received appeals from residents of Chechnya, whose names were mentioned in the article of the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper about extrajudicial executions in the republic and persecutions of LGBT people.

In April this year, the “Novaya Gazeta” reported on mass detentions and murders in Chechen of men suspected of non-traditional sexual orientation. On July 9, the newspaper wrote that in Chechnya at night on January 26, they executed at least 27 persons, earlier detained in connection with the attack on policemen in Grozny on December 17, 2016. The republic’s authorities treated this information as a lie.

Tatiana Moskalkova "will discuss topical human rights issues in Chechnya," the Ombudsperson’s website reports.

It should be noted here that the defence of Magomed Taramov and Djamalai Tazbiev, who were sentenced, on September 5, to five years in prison on charges of an attempt to leave for Syria, has complained about Ramzan Kadyrov's refusal to study the case. The young people reported torture after being detained.
