Baku: activist Abbasov complains about intolerable custody conditions
Azeri opposition activist Uzeir Abbasov, sentenced to 30 days of administrative arrest on charges of disobeying the police, is held in an overcrowded cell where prisoners are sleeping in turn, his advocate reports.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 5, the court sentenced Uzeyir Abbasov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) to 30 days of arrest after finding him guilty of disobeying the policemen’s lawful demands. Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has dismissed the defence’s complaint and left the opposition activist in custody.
Uzeyir Abbasov is kept at the detention facility for administratively arrested persons in the Binagadi District of Baku and complains about his custody conditions, Asabali Mustafaev, his advocate, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
"Four detainees are kept in two-place cell; and they have to sleep in turn. The administration explains that the facility is overcrowded. Besides, Abbasov is deprived of his legitimate right to make telephone calls; we intend to complain about it separately," said Mustafaev.
The defence intends to file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
