In Yerevan, market in Firdusi Street dismantled (+video)

On July 20, the Yerevan authorities almost completely dismantled one of the old clothing markets located in Firdusi Street in the centre of Yerevan. This time, sellers did not resist officials of the Mayor's Office, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

In their turn, tenants of houses adjacent to the market fear that after the demolition of the market their houses will be also dismantled. According to the tenants, the rumours have long been circulating that their houses will fall into the zone of new construction.

"There are fears that we will suffer the same fate as residents of the Yerevan centre, and we will not receive appropriate compensation," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Lilit Galstyan, a tenant of one of the houses in Firdusi Street.

"Some of our neighbours have already been deceived. A developing company went bankrupt, and they finally did not receive housing instead of their demolished houses," noted Lilit Galstyan.

The resident of Yerevan has also noted that her family members were engaged in selling goods in the market and turned their garage into a trading outlet. "We were deprived of bread and the opportunity to solve our social problems," the woman said.

According to Lilit Galstyan, the authorities have neglected the contracts on the lease of trade places signed by the sellers till the end of the year. "A party which violated contract terms shall compensate for the losses. However, given the country we live in, there is no sense to go to court. We do not trust this court system," stated the Yerevan resident.
