SC upholds foreign agent status for "EcoWatch"

The Supreme Court (SC) of Adygea has upheld the decision pronounced by the Maikop City Court to recognize the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus" as a foreign agent.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 29, the Supreme Court of Adygea considered the complaint filed by the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus" (EcoWatch) about the decision pronounced by the Maikop City Court. On December 16, 2016, the Court recognized that the organization violated the law on NGOs. In July, the Maikop City Court found no evidence for violation of the law on foreign agents by the "EcoWatch" and stopped the proceedings.

On June 16, 2017, the "EcoWatch" filed to the Supreme Court of the Republic of Adygea an appeal about its recognition as a "foreign agent." In the case, the respondent party was the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for the Russian Federation represented by the Russian MoJ's Department for Adygea, the "Yasno" reports.

In September 2016, the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus" was recognized as a foreign agent. Members of the Presidential Human Rights Council (HRC) drew Vladimir Putin's attention to ambiguity of the above decision, and the Russian President instructed his subordinates to re-check the list of foreign agents.
