Russia demands from Azerbaijan to stop discriminating Russian citizens with Armenian surnames

According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), since the beginning of this year, 25 Russian citizens have been refused in entry to Azerbaijan. They were detained for several hours, in some cases they were left without food, water, and medical care and then sent out at their own expense. Armenian surnames of Russian citizens were mentioned as a ground for the refusal to let them enter Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, there were also cases when "persons with Russian surnames, names and patronymics were questioned with the purpose to reveal their Armenian ancestors," the "TASS" reports.

"We have to state that Russian citizens arriving in Azerbaijan are indeed discriminated on ethnic grounds. And we continue demanding to stop the shocking discriminatory practice incompatible with friendly relations between our two countries. Of course, we will draw conclusions from the current situation," the Russian MFA reported.

According to the Russian MFA's officials, they have repeatedly, including through formal notices, demanded to stop the above discriminatory practice, but received no appropriate or satisfactory answer.
