Georgian Premier urges President to grant citizenship to Mukhtarly family

Georgian authorities are ready to help the family of the Azerbaijani journalist Afghan Mukhtarly with the necessary legal procedures, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, has stated. He asked the President to grant citizenship to Mukhtarly's wife and children.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after the kidnapping of the oppositional journalist Afghan Mukhtarly, his family found their further stay in Georgia unsafe. Leyla Mustafaeva, Afghan's wife, stated her intent to leave the country. However, today she said that she had changed her mind.

The Premier's statement reads that "first of all, Afghan Mukhtarly's case is a blow to the country's image, which is absolutely unacceptable." According to Mr Kvirikashvili, the inquiry into the incident has already begun, and "in the interests of the country is to do it absolutely transparently."

Let us remind you that on May 31, protesters in Tbilisi demanded explanations from Georgian authorities about the Mukhtarly's kidnapping. The human rights organization Amnesty International has accused the country's authorities of involvement in the kidnapping.
