"UNM" Party supports plebiscite on presidential election system

Following the "Free Democrats" Party and the Republican Party, the "United National Movement" (UNM) has also supported the demand to conduct a questioning of citizens concerning the way to elect the President of Georgia. Meanwhile, members of the "UNM" Party believe that the authorities will not appoint a plebiscite.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 2, members of the parliamentary opposition "European Georgia" Party started collecting signatures under the Party's demand to hold a plebiscite on the issue of amending the Constitution. In order for the plebiscite to be appointed, members of the initiative group are to collect 200,000 signatures of supporters of the plebiscite. On May 8, two non-parliamentary parties the "Free Democrats" Party and the Republican Party announced their support for the demand for plebiscite.

On May 8, Roman Gotsiridze, one of the leaders of the "United National Movement" (UNM), announced that the "UNM" Party supports holding a plebiscite in connection with the rule of the elections of the President and the Parliament.

"The authorities wish to create some illusion of consideration in a hall where the opposition is in the minority and illusion that if the whole nation supports the presented option, while in fact no one approves it," stated Roman Gotsiridze.

He has emphasized that the "UNM" Party supports holding a plebiscite. However, Roman Gotsiridze believes that the Georgian Prime Minister will not appoint the questioning, since the authorities do not care about the people's opinion, the "Georgia Online" reports.
