Kalmyk activists demand enforcing rehabilitation law on repressed nations
Delegates of the Congress of the Oirat-Kalmyk People have addressed the Russian authorities with a demand to enforce the law "On the Rehabilitation of Repressed Nations" and bring the corruption cases in Kalmykia to the courts.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the city administration of Elista, the capital of Kalmykia, refused to sanction the rally, applied for by delegates of the above Congress, which the organizers planned to hold on April 29.
The Oirats are the nationals, represented in the territory of Russia by Kalmyks. In 1920, the Kalmyk Autonomous Region was formed on Kalmyk lands; and in 1935 it was transformed into the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR). In 1943, the autonomy was liquidated; and Kalmyks were evicted.
According to Aduchi Erdneev, a delegate of the Congress of the Oirat-Kalmyk People, they managed to hold the rally. He has treated the authorities' refusal to sanction the action as groundless.
Today, Batyr Boromangnaev, one of the organizers of the rally, posted its resolution on the Facebook, where activists demand "to bring to the court all the cases related to corruption in the bodies of power."
"Should the authorities ignore our demands, we reserve the right to bring the people of Kalmykia to a nationwide rally. We are ready to demand resignation of the whole staff of the republic's government," the authors of the resolution state.
